Reading for Life

“Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel.” – Socrates

Last week we had the opportunity to attend a presentation with a nationally known author. The evening was very enjoyable; it was filled with humor and best of all we learned a lot. During the presentation, the author book talked a first time author’s novel that he has been reading. Not only did the audience have a great time, we were all ready to buy the book he talked about!

The author shared with us his love of learning and reading in the midst of his presentation. In turn, he had us talking later about the learning process and the importance of being a lifelong learner. Being a lifelong learner is the goal we strive to achieve at Glacier Ridge with students and staff every day. As parents, there are many ways for you to partner with us to achieve this goal.

One of the sure fire ways to partner with us is to instill the love of learning by reading aloud to your child each and every night. We guarantee that this is quality time will not only support literacy, but it will bring everyone together. Working together, we will help our children excel as learners well into the future.

Often we think that reading aloud is for our youngest learners. This is not true. Literacy experts, such as Dr. Steven Layne, tell us that when parents and teachers read aloud to children (that are already independent readers) they have access to greater vocabulary and concepts they may not be able to access themselves. Further, this provides a wonderful opportunity to have rich discussions with your child and as a family.

We know that many of you already are practicing this beneficial habit, and we encourage you to continue. If you have not yet started, why not begin today? Pick a time in the evening that best fits your schedule. Often right at bedtime works the best. Once you begin you will be amazed at how rewarding it is for the whole family. We challenge you to continue the habit even as your child moves into middle or high school. Together we will all be learners. Happy reading!

Below are some suggestions for great read alouds.
