“Remember that the happiest people are not those getting more, but those giving more.” H. Jackson Brown, Jr., Life's Little Instruction Book
Recently, we (Mrs. Gruper and Mr. Jacobsen) were discussing the content of Joan Young’s blog post: 8 Reasons Why Parents should be Involved at School (1). We reflected on the fact that we are blessed here at GRS to have such wonderful families that are so giving to the school. Your involvement makes a great impact on elevating the learning experience and environment for the students. That involvement is part of our GRS culture and is reflected in our ongoing school improvement process.
GRs and District 47, overall, uses the Rising Star (Indistar) framework to help guide each school and the district through the school improvement process. As part of the state’s Rising Star Continuous School Improvement Planning, each school forms a committee to analyze data from the school and focuses diligently on various contributing factors to raise student achievement. The factors reviewed include: Conditions for Learning, Professional Development, Leadership, Curriculum, Instruction, Assessment, Comprehensive Planning and Community and Family Engagement. These collaborative meetings allow staff members to focus on improving the school in very specific areas ultimately focusing on student achievement so that even our most struggling learners succeed.
Without focusing on the Community and Family Engagement component we know that GRS would not be as successful as it is. We are so glad that you partner with us, because there are so many ways to volunteer and make a difference at Glacier Ridge: reading in classrooms, volunteering in the library, organizing our book room, and completing TAP room requests for classrooms, etc. Contact us in the office for ways that you can help. D’Arcy Lyness says it well in her article (2), “Remember that volunteering not only benefits your kids, but will enrich the classroom, the whole school, and the entire community by providing students with positive interaction, support, and encouragement.”
